Chelsea Kayak Club will be hosting a special screening and talk with Justine Curgenven, about her epic paddle with Sarah Outen across the Aleutian islands, at 6.30pm on Sunday 1st November at the Doodle Bar, Battersea.
Justine is the expedition sea kayaker and award-winning adventure film maker behind the highly acclaimed ‘This is the Sea’ series of DVDs. Ocean Paddler referred to her as “a trail blazer in creativity as well as in expedition routes”. Her film Kayaking the Aleutians has won multiple awards at film festivals around the world.
The expedition was part of Sarah Outen’s London2London: Via the World, a global circumnavigation using human power alone. Sarah started from Tower Bridge four years ago and has since kayaked to France, cycled across Europe and Asia, kayaked to Japan, rowed and paddled across the Pacific Ocean to Alaska, cycled across North America and has most recently been heading for home by rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.
Unfortunately, after 143 days at sea, Sarah and her team made the decision to abandon the trip, before winds of up to 60 knots and huge impassable waves caused by the tail end of Hurricane Joaquin hit her. A passing ship was able to pick her up but sadly her boat, Happy Socks, was lost at sea due to the complexity of the pick up.
This event will have special significance, as Sarah is continuing her journey by cycling from Falmouth to Oxford, before kayaking from Oxford to London. With her imminent arrival at Tower Bridge due on Tuesday 3rd November, the evening will also be celebration of this incredible achievement.
